Religious Education

Key Stage 3 Summary

RE and Citizenship are taught together at The Bridge Academy, with each term being focused on one or the other.

We believe that RE and Citizenship are essential in developing the cultural and social awareness of our students so that they can be engaged and fascinated by local and global issues.

Key Stage 3 RE follows these main topics:

Year 7 – Belief in God, Buddhism, Human Rights
Year 8 – Nuclear weapons, Jesus, Islam
Year 9 – Euthanasia, Rwandan Genocide, Democracy

In RE and Citizenship honest, rigorous and frank debate is central to how we learn. We expect students to be tolerant of each other whilst engaging in lively discussion.

Key Stage 4 Summary

At GCSE we study AQA Religious Studies over a two year course.

We cover:

  • Christianity – beliefs and practices
  • Islam – beliefs and practices
  • Religion and Life (abortion, creation, animal rights)
  • Religion, peace and conflict
  • Religion, crime and punishment
  • Religion, human rights and social justice

GCSE RS has become far more rigorous with recent government changes, requiring students to have specific knowledge of religious texts and to also be able to evaluate information for strengths and weaknesses.

Key Stage 5 Summary

We study AQA Philosophy in a two year course which will be moving to linear in 2017.

It is a very academic A Level which remains highly respected for the grounding it gives students in logic, argumentation and essay writing skills.

The four main topics are:

  • Ethics
  • Epistemology (the study of knowledge)
  • Philosophy of mind
  • Metaphysics of God
  • Learning Ladders

In RE/Citizenship the Learning Ladders will help students to identify the main skills they will need to display in any upcoming module or assessment.

Key Stage 3 – there is a Learning Ladder for each unit, make sure you use the correct one.

Key Stage 4 and 5 – the Learning Ladders focus on each of the elements of the exam paper.

The intention would be that each subject page would have a series of links to Learning Ladders like this:
